Introducing myBase Javascript APIs

myBase has integrated the Javascript engine, and exposes a set of plugin API functions in Javascript; With the plugin API, you can write your own plugins (scripts) to manipulate information stored in your .nyf databases and perform particular tasks.

Writting Plugins in Javascript

Making myBase plugins in Javascript is simple. Just write source code using a text editor (e.g. Windows Notepad), and save it as a *.js file within the ./plugins sub folder under the program's install folder, and then re-launch myBase for new plugins to be registered and shown on toolbars and/or menus. Here are a few examples of plugin scripts.

The word 'JavaScript' may bring to mind features such as event handlers (like onclick), DOM objects, window.open, and getElementById. But within myBase Javascript API, there're no such interfaces at all. myBase exposes a set of application specific classes, objects and functions, such as the objects 'plugin', 'platform', and the classes 'CNyfDb', 'CLocalFile', 'CLocalDir', 'CAppWord', etc. for manipulating .nyf databases and local files, and exchanging data with Microsoft Office.

Installing .js Plugins

myBase loads .js plugins by default from the './plugins' sub directory under the program's installation directory. You have the convenience of installing .js plugins by simply putting .js plugin files to the './plugins' directory, and then re-launch myBase to let new plugins to be registered and listed in the menus or on the toolbar.

In addition, myBase supports loading plugins from multiple directories; To customize the plugin directories, please try to edit the myBase.ini config file by using a plain text editor (e.g. notepad.exe) at the line below; Multiple directories are separated with a semicolon.

In order for your plugin script to be registered and installed in menus or on toolbars, a file header must be inserted in front of your functional script code within the .js file; The file header describes the plugin script and defines a few values to determine how/where to install it.

The file header consists of a couple of [name=value] entries. Here's a sample header.

Explanation:

  • sValidation: The '//sValidation=nyfjs' header must be kept in the .js plugin files as it is (hard-coded);
  • sCaption: the plugin's caption text, shown on menus or toolbars;
  • sHint: the descriptive text about the plugin functionality, shown on the status bar when the menu item is hovered;
  • sCategory: specifies in which menu or toolbar to put the plugin item; it can be 'MainMenu.[***]', or 'Context.[***]', and or 'ToolBar.[***]', where '[***]' is a menu/toolbar's tag name (English, not localized names);
  • sPosition: specifies a tag in alphabetical order for positioning the plugin item inside the target menu or toolbar;
  • sCondition: specifies in which conditions are required for the plugin to function normally, can be a combination of the following values;
    • CURDB: the current database must be open and accessible;
    • DBRW: the current database must be read/writeable;
    • CURINFOITEM: the current info item must be available and accessible;
    • HTMLEDIT: the current HTML content must be editable;
    • OUTLINE: the outline pane must be visible and active (focused);
    • HTMLSELECTED: the HTML content is currently active (focused) or has text content selected;
    • TABLE: the input caret must be put in a <table> section in the HTML content;
  • sID: a tag to identify the plugin item; it's also used for localization of messages and plugin icons;

A Simple Way of Testing Script Code

myBase provides a simple way of testing your script code without having to writting script code in separate .js files, you can simply write script code in the inbuilt HTML editor, and then highlight the script code, and select the [Tools - Evaluate expression or js code] menu item to evaluate it. If the script code (e.g. a math expression) returns a value that is not 'undefined' or empty string, it will be inserted into the HTML content as a result of the script.

Concepts & Terms

To get started with myBase Javascript APIs, learning about the following concepts and terms would be helpful.

  1. SSG: stands for the structured storage library on which myBase is built.
  2. Database: stands for myBase .nyf databases.
  3. SSG path: reference to file/folder entries in .nyf databases; it works like file system on hard disk.
  4. SSG file: stands for a file-like entry (e.g. attachment) in .nyf databases, and is referred by SSG file path (e.g. /organizer/data/1/2/3/abc.txt).
  5. SSG folder: stands for a folder-like entry (e.g. info item) in .nyf databases, and is referred by SSG folder path (e.g. /organizer/data/1/2/3/).
  6. SSG entry: stands for either a file or folder entry.
  7. Nyf root path: SSG path to the container of all top-level info items in .nyf databases; it is hard-coded as '/Organizer/data';
  8. AppDataOfEntry: each SSG file/folder entry maintains a list of application-defined data (Integers).
  9. platform object: provides a set of API which wraps system specific functions.
  10. plugin object: provides a set of API which wraps myBase plugin API, for accessing selected content in views or controlling the main program.
  11. CNyfDb class: provides a set of API which wraps the SSG structured storage library, for accessing to files/folders within .nyf databases by using SSG paths.
  12. CLocalFile class: provides a set of API for accessing to local files.
  13. CLocalDir class: provides a set of API for accessing to local directories.
  14. CAppWord classes: provides a set of API for controlling MS-Word by using OLE-Automation.

The Global Functions Reference

The global functions (e.g. alert, confirm, input, etc.) can be called directly without preceding instantiation or initialization.

about

The 'about' function returns the application information, such as program title, version, copyright notice, etc.;

  • Prototype: about();

  • Return Value: String;

alert

The 'alert' function displays a given message in a popup window;

  • Prototype: alert(sMsg, sTitle);
  • Parameters:
    1. sMsg: specifies a message to display;
    2. sTitle: specifies a title for the popup window;
  • Return Value: Undefined
  • Example: alert('Hello, World!');

confirm

The 'confirm' function displays a given message in a popup window, and asks for user confirmation;

  • Prototype: confirm(sMsg, sTitle);
  • Parameters:
    1. sMsg: specifies a message to display;
    2. sTitle: specifies a title for the popup window;
  • Return Value: true on pressing 'Yes', or false on 'No';

prompt

The 'prompt' function displays a dialog box asking for user input;

    1. sMsg: specifies a message to display;

dropdown

The 'dropdown' function displays a dropdown box allowing end-users to select an item from a given list;

  • Prototype: dropdown(sDescr, vEntries);
  • Parameters:
    1. sDescr: a descriptive text;
    2. vEntries, an Array containing items to be listed;
  • Return Value: index of the selected item, 0-based; or -1 on cancel.

input

The 'input' function displays a dialog box for end-users to input one or more field values within a customizable form;

  • Prototype: input(sTitle, vFields, xOptions);
  • Synonym: form(sTitle, vFields, xOptions);
  • Parameters:
    1. sTitle: title of the dialog box;
    2. vFields, an Array containing input fields to be shown in the dialog box; Each input field takes an item (JS Object) in the form of:

      Based on type of input fields, the actual attributes of the Object may vary, see below;

The 'beep' function generates a 'beep' tone on the speaker.

The 'sleep' function suspends the execution of the current thread for a specified interval.

The 'browseForFolder' function displays the common 'Browse Folder' dialog box, whereby end-users can browse the file system and select a folder location.

    2. sInitDir: an initial directory;

platform.getTempFile

The 'getTempFile' function creates a file name that is unique in the system temporary directory or the specified directory.

    1. sTmpDir: specifies a directory where a temporary filename is created;
    2. sPrefix: specifies a prefix for the temporary file name;
    3. sSuffix: specifies a extension name for the temporary file name;

platform.getTempPath

The 'getTempPath' function returns the system defined temporary directory.

  • Prototype: platform.getTempPath();

  • Return Value: the system-defined temporary directory;

platform.getHomePath

The 'getHomePath' function returns the current user's home directory.

platform.getCurrentPath

The 'getCurrentPath' function returns the currently working directory.

platform.deferDeleteFile

The 'deferDeleteFile' function schedules a file to be deleted later on (normaly occurs at exit of the application).

  • Prototype: platform.deferDeleteFile(sFilePath, bForcedly);
  • Parameters:
    1. sFilePath: path to a file being deleted at exit;
  • Return Value: undefined;
  • Example: platform.deferDeleteFile('/home/username/test/tmp.txt');

platform.extractTextFromRtf

The 'extractTextFromRtf' function parses a given RTF text, and returns plain text excluding RTF formatting data.

  • Prototype: platform.extractTextFromRtf(sRtfText);
  • Parameters:
    1. sRtfText: the source RTF text to be parsed;
  • Return Value: the plain text without RTF formatting is returned;
  • Example: var sTxt=platform.extractTextFromRtf(sRtfTxt);

platform.extractTextFromHtml

The 'extractTextFromHtml' function parses the given HTML source, and returns the plain text excluding HTML formatting tags.

  • Prototype: platform.extractTextFromHtml(sHtmlText);
  • Parameters:
    1. sHtmlText: the HTML source to be parsed;
  • Return Value: the plain text without HTML formatting tags is returned;
  • Example: var sTxt=platform.extractTextFromHtml('<p>Hello world</p>');

platform.parseFile

The 'parseFile' function parses a given file, and returns plain text excluding formatting data if any.

  • Prototype: platform.parseFile(sFilePath, sExt);
  • Parameters:
    1. sFilePath: path to the file to be parsed;
    2. sExt: specifies an appropriate extension name that could help determine the document type;
  • Return Value: the plain text without any formatting data is returned;
  • Example: var sTxt=platform.parseFile('d:\\test\1.doc');

platform.tokenizeText

The 'tokenizeText' function splits a given text into a token list.

  • Prototype: platform.tokenizeText(sTxt, sDelimiter);
  • Parameters:
    1. sTxt: text to be tokenized;
    2. sDelimiter: a separator character; Defaults to a comma;
  • Return Value: the token list as a string;
  • Example: var sTokens=platform.tokenizeText(sTxt, '|');

platform.getClipboardText

The 'getClipboardText' function retrieves text content from the system's Clipboard.

  • Prototype: platform.getClipboardText(sSubType);
  • Parameters:
    1. sSubType: value of the sub type can be either 'plain' or 'html';
  • Return Value: string of text on clipboard;
  • Example: var sTxt=platform.getClipboardText('plain');

platform.setClipboardText

The 'setClipboardText' function copies the specified text to the System's Clipboard.

  • Prototype: platform.setClipboardText(sTxt);
  • Parameters:
    1. sTxt: text to be copied to Clipboard;
  • Return Value: true on success.
  • Example: var bSucc=platform.setClipboardText('TEXT CONTENT');

platform.setClipboardHtml

The 'setClipboardHtml' function copies the specified HTML content to the System's Clipboard.

  • Prototype: platform.setClipboardHtml(sHtml);

    1. sHtml: HTML source text to be copied to Clipboard;
  • Return Value: true on success.

The 'plugin' Object Reference

The 'plugin' object provides a set of API functions for accessing application specific attributes/contents, and controlling the main window.

plugin.getAppWorkingDir

The 'getAppWorkingDir' function retrieves the currently working directory.

  • Prototype: plugin.getAppWorkingDir();
  • Parameters: None.
  • Return Value: the currently working directory.
  • Example: alert(plugin.getAppWorkingDir());

plugin.getAppExeFile

The 'getAppExeFile' function retrieves full path to the main executable file.

  • Prototype: plugin.getAppExeFile();
  • Parameters: None.
  • Return Value: file path to the main program file.
  • Example: alert(plugin.getAppExeFile());

plugin.getPluginID

The 'getPluginID' function retrieves ID of the plugin defined in the script header ( //sID=... ).

  • Return Value: ID of the plugin.

    2. bFullPath: specified if or not to include full SSG path for each entries. Defaults to false with only filenames returned.

The 'getSelectedText' function retrieves the currently selected text within the HTML editor.

The 'setTextContent' function replaces the whole content with the given text in the HTML editor.

  • Prototype: plugin.setTextContent(iDbPos, sTxt, bRich, sSsgFn);

    2. sTxt: the new HTML source or plain text.

plugin.getQueryResults

The 'getQueryResults' function retrieves all items or the currently selected items within the query results window. The return value consists of text lines of the query results separated by the linefeed character '\n'; Each item takes a line of fields in form of 'sDbPath \t sSsgPath \t sSsgName' separated with a specified delimiter, by default '\t'.

  • Prototype: plugin.getQueryResults(bSelected, sDelimiter);
  • Parameters:
    1. bSelected: determines if to return all listed query results or just selected items.
    2. sDelimiter: a delimiter character to separate fields for each items; Defaults to the TAB charater '\t'.

The 'CNyfDb' class exposes a set of functions for accessing to files/folders stored in .nyf databases.

CNyfDb's Constructor

There're two methods to construct an object of the CNyfDb class from either a position number or a .nyf file path;

  1. Constructing a CNyfDb object from a position number of a .nyf database opened and listed on the database Tab control in the main window.
    • Prototype: CNyfDb(iDbPos);
    • Parameters:
      1. iDbPos, a position number (0-based) of a .nyf database opened and listed on the database Tab control in the main window. Defaults to (-1), which stands for the currently working database.
    • Return Value: an object of the CNyfDb class.

CNyfDb::open

The 'open' function opens a specified database, and accepts the same arguments with the CNyfDb Constructor; Note that the opened database keeps invisible without adding a new Tab in the main window, you can access to files/folders saved in the database by calling the following functions.

CNyfDb::close

CByteArray::saveToFile

The 'saveToFile' function writes bytes to a specified file.

  • Prototype: saveToFile(sFn);

    1. sFn: full path to a destination file;
  • Return Value: number of bytes successfully written to the file; Or -1 on error;

    var a=new CByteArray('Wjjsoft myBase', 'UTF-8');

CByteArray::base64

The 'base64' function returns a copy of the byte array, encoded as Base64.

  • Prototype: base64();
  • Parameters: None
  • Return Value: a Base64 string.
  • Example:

    alert(a.base64());
    

CByteArray::toString

The 'toString' function converts the bytes into a text string from the given encoding.

  • Prototype: toString(sEncode);
  • Parameters:
    1. sEncode: tag of text encoding, one of the values: UTF8, ANSI, LATIN1, LOCAL8BIT, BASE64; defaults to ANSI;
  • Return Value: a converted text string.
  • Example:
    var a=new CByteArray();
    a.loadFromFile('/home/username/test/tmp.png');
    alert(a.toString('base64'));

The 'CCanvas' Class Reference

The 'CCanvas' class provides a method to construct a in-memory painting device which allows to draw lines, shapes, text and pixmaps, and save drawings/paintings as image files.

CCanvas's Constructor

The CCanvas's Constructor is used to construct an in-memory painting device context.

  • Prototype: CCanvas();
  • Parameters: None
  • Return Value: an object on success, or undefined on failure.
  • Example:
    var c=new CCanvas(), w=300, h=200;
    c.setCanvasSize(w, h);
    

CCanvas::setCanvasSize

The 'setCanvasSize' function initializes the canvas with the given dimension.

  • Prototype: setCanvasSize(nWidth, nHeight);
  • Parameters:
    1. nWidth: width of the canvas;
    2. nHeight: height of the canvas;
  • Return Value: None.
  • Example:
    var c=new CCanvas(), w=300, h=200;

CCanvas::setViewportOrg

The 'setViewportOrg' function translates the coordinate system by the given offset.

The 'CZip' Class Reference

The 'CZip' class provides the methods of creating, accessing and manipulating the regular .zip archives.

CZip's Constructor

The CZip's Constructor is used to construct a CZip object.

  • Prototype: CZip();
  • Parameters: None
  • Return Value: an object on success, or undefined on failure.
  • Example:
    var z=new CZip();
    

CZip::create

The 'create' function creates a .zip archive in the file system.

  • Prototype: create(sFn);
  • Parameters:
    1. sFn: path to a .zip file;
  • Return Value: true on success, or false on failure.
  • Example:
    var z=new CZip();
    var bSucc=z.create('/home/username/test.zip');
    if(bSucc){
    	z.close();

CZip::open

The 'open' function opens an existing .zip archive.

  • Prototype: open(sFn, bRO);
  • Parameters:
    1. sFn: path to the .zip archive;
    2. bRO: determines whether to open the .zip archive as Readonly;
  • Return Value: true on success, or false on failure.
  • Example:
    var z=new CZip();

CZip::close

The 'close' function closes the currently opened .zip archive.

CZip::isOpen

The 'isOpen' function tests if the .zip archive is normally opened.

CZip::addEntry

The 'addEntry' function appends an entry into the currently opened .zip archive.

  • Prototype: addEntry(sFnSrc, sFnDst);
  • Parameters:
    1. sFnSrc: path to the source data file in the file system;
    2. sFnDst: path to the destination file within the .zip archive;
  • Return Value: number of bytes copied into the .zip archive, or -1 on failure.
  • Example:
    var z=new CZip();
    var bSucc=z.open('/home/username/test.zip', false);
    if(bSucc){
    	var nBytes=z.addEntry('/home/username/123.txt', '/sub/abc.txt');

CZip::extractEntry

The 'extractEntry' function extractes an entry from within the currently opened .zip archive.

  • Prototype: extractEntry(sFnSrc, sFnDst);
  • Parameters:
    1. sFnSrc: path to the source data file in the .zip archive;
    2. sFnDst: path to the destination file in the file system;
  • Return Value: number of bytes copied into the destination file, or -1 on failure.
  • Example:
    var z=new CZip();
    var bSucc=z.open('/home/username/test.zip', true);
    if(bSucc){
    	var nBytes=z.extractEntry('/sub/abc.txt', '/home/username/456.txt');

CZip::listEntries

The 'listEntries' function lists out all existing entries in the currently opened .zip archive.

  • Return Value: An array containing file names of the entries.

The 'CAppWord' Class Reference

The 'CAppWord' class wraps a subset of MS-Word OLE functions for data exchange between myBase and MS-Word. This is a platform specific feature and is now available for Windows only, and requires an appropriate installation of MS-Word 2000+.

CAppWord's Constructor

The CAppWord's Constructor is used to create an object binding with MS-Word OLE Automation.

  • Prototype: CAppWord();
  • Parameters: None
  • Return Value: an object on success, or undefined on failure.
  • Example:
    var xMsw=new CAppWord();
    if(xMsw && xMsw.init()){
    	alert(xMsw.getVersion());

CAppWord::init

The 'init' function attempts to make connections to the currently running MS-Word instances. This function requires that Microsoft Word has currently been running in the system.

  • Return Value: true on success, or false on failure.

The 'CAppOutlook' class wraps a subset of MS-Outlook OLE functions for data exchange between myBase and MS-Outlook. This is a platform specific feature and is now available for Windows only, and requires an appropriate installation of MS-Outlook 2000+.

CAppOutlook::init

The 'init' function attempts to make connections to the currently running MS-Outlook instances. This function requires that Microsoft Outlook has currently been running in the system, and with certain old versions of Microsoft Outlook on Windows 7+, myBase is required to be running as administrator for rights performing Inter-Process Communication via OLE.

  • Prototype: init();
  • Parameters: None
  • Return Value: true on success, or false on failure.
  • Example:
